Logró una victoria en el oeste, y el resto, hasta 54, estaban marcadas con la estrella roja de la aviación soviética. En el verano de 1940 se unió al JG 51 con tan solo 26 años de edad, siendo asignado al 9./JG 51. Su primera victoria la logró durante la Batalla de Inglaterra cuando el 14 de septiembre de 1940 derribó un caza Spitifre (marcada con una escarapela en la deriva de su Messerschmitt). Su siguiente victoria fue en Rusia, cuando destruyó 5 bombarderos soviéticos SB-2 logrando más victorias durante los dos siguientes días hasta alcanzar un registro de 11 en total. El 11 de agosto un biplano I-15 se convirtió en su victoria número 20.

El 10 de septiembre de 1941 se encontraba escoltando un aparato de reconocimiento cuando fueron atacados por 5 cazas I-16. En el combate que se desencadenó cuatro de ellos fueron destruidos por los cañones de Wagner y el quinto logró escapar bastante dañado salvando al aparato de reconocimiento. Con estas victorias su palmarés había alcanzado la cifra de 27 victorias. Para el 27 de octubre su registro hablaba de 50 victorias acreditadas (22 de ellas logradas durante el mes de octubre).

El 13 de noviembre de 1941 Wagner interceptó una formación de bombarderos Pe-2 cerca de Pawmutowka. Sin embargo su Messerschmitt Bf 109 F-2 (W.Nr. 9693) “1 Amarillo” fue alcanzado por el fuego defensivo y terminó por estrellarse contra el suelo muriendo en la acción.

With these victories had reached their record number of 27 victories. For the October 27 registration 50 victories spoke credits (22 of them achieved during the month of October).

On November 13, 1941 Wagner intercepted a formation of bombers Pe-2 near Pawmutowka. However his Messerschmitt Bf 109 F-2 (W.Nr. 9693) "1 Yellow" was hit by defensive fire and ended up crashing into the ground dying in action.
