Experten alemanes: Franz Schiess

Oberleutnant Franz Schiess


Franz Schiess (o Schieß) nacido en Wörth, Austria, el 25 de febrero de 1921 participó en la invasión de Polonia como Arbeitsdienstmann antes de ser transferido a la Luftwaffe para recibir entrenamiento como piloto de caza. Para el 8 de marzo de 1941 fue destinado al JG 53 en el frente del Canal de la Mancha luchando contra las incursiones de la RAF. Durante este periodo y con el rango de Leutnant fue asignado al Geschwaderstab como Adjutant y bajo la tutela de Günther Freiherr von Maltzahn (68 victorias). Cuando estalló la invasión de Rusia el 22 de junio de 1941 logró sus primeras victorias al derribar un biplano soviético I-153 por la mañana y un bombardero DB-3 ya por la tarde. A principios de agosto el registro de victorias de la cola de su Bf 109 sumaban ya 14 victorias acreditadas cuando la unidad, el JG 53, fue retirado del frente del este para ser re-equipado y enviado al Mediterráneo.

Desde sus bases en Sicilia el JG 53 realizó operaciones sobre la isla de Malta dónde logró derribar 11 aparatos de la RAF, uno de ello no confirmado. Entre los derribos confirmados se encontraba su victoria número 20, un Spitfire de la RAF derribado el 18 de julio de 1942. A finales de noviembre de ese mismo año el JG 53 fue enviado para operar sobre Túnez dónde Schiess continuó sumando más y más éxitos. Fueron en los cielos del norte de África dónde sumaría otras 13 victorias más, incluyendo su primer Viermot (bombardero cuatrimotor), un B-17 derribado cerca de Bizerte el 29 de enero de 1943 (victoria número 36). El 16 de febrero de 1943 fue nombrado Staffelkapitän del 8./JG 53, unidad que lideraría durante el resto de la campaña tunecina, Sicilia e Italia. El 5 de abril de 1943 los cazas aliados destruyeron un total de 24 transportes Ju 52, entre abatidos y destruidos en tierra. Fue en este combate aéreo dónde Schiess dio caza a  un Spitifre que se convertiría en su victoria número 40.

Schiess era un piloto agresivo a los mandos de su Messerschmitt durante la campaña tunecina y en la posterior lucha aérea sobre Sicilia. La lucha final sobre Túnez fue encarnizada y el 4 de diciembre de 1942 participó en la destrucción total de una formación de 12 bombarderos Bristol Blenheim de la RAF. Fue en este combate dónde reclamó su victoria número 27.

Su victoria número 50 la logró al derribar un P-38 de la USAAF cerca de Pantelleria el 21 de mayo. Con 55 victorias recibió la preciada Ritterkreuz (21 de junio) y en Julio fue enviado a casa para descansar gozando de un permiso. Tras regresar al frente en agosto logró derribar 12 aparatos aliados en 11 días, 7 de ellos eran cazas P-38 de la USAAF. Su última victoria la logró el 30 de agosto, también sobre un P-38, siendo su victoria número 67. Schiess no regresó de una misión el 2 de septiembre de 1943 cuando realizaba una patrulla sobre el Golfo de Nápoles. Cerca  del Vesuvio divisó una formación de bombarderos estadounidenses entablando combate con la escolta., pronto la lucha se prolongó hasta el mar, cerca de la isla de Ischia. Dos de los P-38 perseguían al su punto (Katschmarek) y otros tantos a él mismo. Nunca más se ha sabido nada de Schiess ni de su Bf 109 G-6 6 (W.Nr. 160 022) “1 Negro”.

Franz Schiess (or Schiess) born in Wörth, Austria, on February 25, 1921 participated in the invasion of Poland as Arbeitsdienstmann before being transferred to the Luftwaffe for training as a fighter pilot. For the March 8, 1941 he was assigned to JG 53 on the front of Channel battling the RAF raids. During this period and with the rank of Leutnant was assigned to Geschwaderstab as Adjutant and under the tutelage of Günther Freiherr von Maltzahn (68 victories). When the invasion of Russia broke the 22 June 1941 achieved its first victories in shooting down Soviet biplane I-153 in the morning and a DB-3 bomber and afternoon. In early August the winning record of the tail of his Bf 109 and totaled 14 victories credited when the unit, JG 53, was withdrawn from the Eastern Front to be re-equipped and sent to the Mediterranean.

On April 5, 1943 Allied fighters destroyed a total of 24 Ju 52 transports, between killed and destroyed on the ground. It was at this air combat game where Schiess gave a Spitifre that would become his 40th victory.

Schiess was an aggressive driver at the wheel of his Messerschmitt during the Tunisian campaign and subsequent aerial combat over Sicily. The final fight was fierce and Tunisia December 4, 1942 participated in the destruction of a formation of 12 Bristol Blenheim bombers of the RAF. It was in this battle where claimed win number 27.

His 50th victory succeeded in shooting down the P-38 of the USAAF near Pantelleria on 21 May. With 55 wins received the coveted Ritterkreuz (June 21) and in July was sent home to rest enjoying a permit.
