Bristol Beaufighter: Uso operativo

English versión

The Coastal Command Beaufighter began using Mk.IC in 1941 as long-range heavy fighter. This new version was introduced in the units in May and the first to receive this new device was 252 ° Sqn. to operate from the besieged island of Malta. Performed well in battle by attacking targets in the surrounding coasts, both navigation and facilities, and also against other aircraft. In this aspect had the same problems as other bottom showing heavy fighters in maneuverability and speed to single-engine fighters.

In the Pacific theater made its appearance in mid-1942 from which time it was noted in their ground attack duties. It is often said that the Japanese nicknamed him "The Whispering Death" (Whispering Death), but it is unclear as it could be facing a canard spread by Bristol for more renowned for its aircraft. The nickname came for the Beaufighter allegedly attacked without being heard or seen until it was too late for them. Whatever it was the Beaufighter had a role in the attack on Japanese shipping in the Pacific. It was also used in Southeast Asia for Indian aviation, the Beaufighter Mk VIF. These devices were used to attack Japanese communication lines in Burma and Thailand.

Australia, as we have seen earlier in another post, also used and manufactured Beaufighters, with letters designating DAP. The first to enter service with the RAAF Beaufighter Mk IC were in attack missions on surface and coastal patrol. The most famous action that saw the RAAF's Beaufighter took place during the Battle of the Bismarck Sea, in cooperation with the A-20 and B-25 of the USAAF.

The Beaufighter survivors were used by the RAF in the Greek Civil War broke out after the Second World War. They were also used by the Portuguese Air Force and other air forces around the world such as Turkey and South American countries.

1 comentario:
