The SS troops had established a strong defense in the mountainous area around Lake Garda hampering the Allied advance north. A group of U.S. assault started across the lake in order to outflank the German troops and forcing their withdrawal. The DUKW amphibious vehicle going more than twenty soldiers but never reach their destination. Now, just 70 years later, we have discovered the remains of the vehicle and part of his crew.

Val Rios, spokesman for an association representing the descendants of soldiers who fought in the Tenth Mountain Division U.S. Army endorses the words that no man abandons any flag and finding the wreck. In the depths of the lake remain the remains of 24 U.S. soldiers who were part of the assault team that fateful night. He remains hopeful that even remain inside the vehicle or in the vicinity thereof, recover and repatriate.

The event took place on the night of April 30, 1945, by then Mussolini had been executed by partisans and hanged, along with his wife and a few others, in a street in Milan. This happened a few days before the accident on Lake Garda, just 24 hours after German forces surrendered in Italy highlighted. On April 30, members of the field artillery battalion 605 were told they had to move one of your pieces to a point on the coast where they could be used more effectively to attack German positions. A storm was forming but a while before another similar vehicle had managed to cross the lake without problems. However, the vehicle was overcome by strong waves caused by the increasing gale. As he approached the harbor in Riva the vehicle began to fill with water, the soldiers began to get rid of all the heavy equipment but all in vain and finally sinking vehicle. Only one man survived, Corporal Thomas Hough, of Dayton, Ohio, who had been a lifeguard before joining the army. Bombardelli Carlo was near the shore when he was 9 years old witnessing the cries of the soldiers in the lake. The next day found eight bags on the beach Americans as silent witnesses to the tragedy.

There was another earlier attempt to locate the remains of the vehicle and its crew by the University of Texas but did not get any results. In 2011 a local association went to work trying to find the vehicle. Rejected the testimony of the only survivor who claimed they had sunk near the shore and expanded the search area using sonar to sweep the bottom of the lake. The remains were covered with mud but finally appeared on screen with the insignia of the United States is still visible on the hull. Now is the hard work of searching the remains of the crew and try to identify them, a task that seems very complicated.
